"Don't Make Him Look Like a Poodle!"

If you've ever said this to your groomer, this one's for you. We explore why this phrase is tricky, how to communicate what you actually want, the surprising versatility of the Poodle cut, and the realities of grooming Doodles.

It's one of the most common things we hear: "I don't want him to look like a Poodle." And we completely understand the spirit of it. But as groomers, it's one of the hardest instructions to work with — and here's why.

The Problem with "Don't" Requests

When you tell us what you don't want, we're left guessing about everything else. "Not a Poodle" doesn't tell us the length you want, the shape of the face, how to handle the legs, or what to do with the tail. It rules out one thing while leaving everything else open.

The most useful instructions tell us what you do want. Even something simple like "keep it natural-looking, about 2 inches long" gives us a clear direction.

The Poodle Cut Is More Versatile Than You Think

Here's a surprise: a lot of the cuts people love on Doodles are technically Poodle cuts. The Poodle trim isn't one style — it's a family of cuts that includes everything from the classic show cut to the very popular "teddy bear" or "puppy cut" look. The rounded face, the fluffy legs, the soft topknot — those are all rooted in Poodle grooming technique.

If you love the way your neighbor's Goldendoodle looks, there's a good chance a Poodle-influenced trim is exactly what achieves it.

The Reality of Doodle Grooming

Doodles — Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and the rest — have coats that vary enormously depending on which parent they take after. Some are wavy and manageable. Others are densely curly and prone to matting. Because of this variation, there's no single "Doodle cut" — each dog needs to be assessed individually.

The best thing you can do is:

  • Bring a reference photo of a cut you like
  • Describe the length in inches rather than by breed comparison
  • Tell us what bothers you most (too poofy? Too sculpted? Too short?)
  • Be honest about your brushing routine — it affects what cut is realistic to maintain

The more specific you can be about what you want, the better we can deliver it. We want you to love the result — so help us help you.
